The current gen Beetle is a fantastic reimagining of the original design. I love the flattened roof over the New Beetle (seriously, fuck whoever thought that name was a good idea) and the optional super-retro hubcap option.

Unpopular: I thought the pure arch roof on the New Beetle was (and is) better looking than the current one, even if the current model is “truer” to its roots. I’ve given it plenty of time to grow on me, but at the end of the day it looks like an unfinished chop job on the New Beetle.

I would not mind New Beetle Turbo R-Line with a 6spd. They are out there, but hard to find.

I love it too. Those wheels manage to be tasteful yet undeniably retro-tastic. The old one drove me nuts because nobody bought one without putting those stupid eyelashes on them.

It’s not a bad car, though I’d rather have a normal Golf or Mini.

Part of me wants the Beetle to go back to what it was originally: a cheap, dependable car for the masses. It can still be quirky, just maybe with a bit more substance than this time.

I like the design, but that name “New Beetle” drives me up the friggin’ wall.

GM truck owners are similarly cursed with the unofficial-yet-still-somehow-popular terms “OBS” (old body style) and “NBS” (new body style) to tell truck generations apart. And if that wasn’t bad enough, there’s “OOBS” (OLD-old) and “NNBS” (NEW-new), too. It’s insane .

But for VW to OFFICIALLY name the vehicle as permanently “New” is dumb on a whole ’nother level.

The new Beetle definitely looks a lot better than the New Beetle. I test drove an older I5 and actually really liked it, the newer retro interiors are pretty great too.

I’ve had two base model Beetles as rentals. A 2012 and a 2015. Both were great driving little cars. I enjoyed my time with both of them. Very smooth, quiet, and planted on the highway. Different feel than other small cars. Fun to drive, too.
